Closed Loop Manufacturing
Closed loop manufacturing is a production approach in which data from the process is measured continuously and fed back to automatically adjust machines and settings. AI and analytics monitor each stage of the manufacturing cycle and correct it in near real time to improve efficiency, quality, and sustainability.
A closed loop has three parts: sensors or cameras measure what is happening, software compares the measurements to targets, and a controller adjusts the process to close the gap. The loop repeats continuously, so the line corrects itself instead of waiting for a person to notice a problem.
For example, a vision AI system that detects parts drifting out of tolerance can send that result back to the line so speeds, temperatures, or material feed are adjusted before more defects are produced.
In open loop manufacturing, the process runs on fixed settings and results are checked afterward. The term closed loop manufacturing is also sometimes used for circular production that recycles materials back into the process; this definition refers to the feedback-control meaning.
