Lights-Out Manufacturing
Lights-out manufacturing is a fully automated production approach in which machines and equipment run without people on site, so the lights can literally be turned off. Robotics, sensors, vision systems, and automation software handle production, enabling continuous, unmanned operation and minimizing manual labor.
To run unattended, a facility needs automated material handling, machines that load and unload themselves, and monitoring that detects problems without an operator present. Vision AI and sensors check quality and equipment health, and alerts reach staff remotely when something needs attention.
A common example is a machining cell that runs an overnight shift on its own, with robots loading parts and cameras inspecting finished pieces, then hands off to a staffed day shift.
Lights-out manufacturing is the far end of automation. Most plants are partially automated, using some unattended operation alongside staffed processes, rather than fully lights-out.
